Japan PM Sanae Takaichi Visits India for 16th Annual Summit Amid Semiconductor Partnerships and Economic Security Push

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi arrived in New Delhi for her first official visit to India and is holding the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The discussions focus on strengthening economic ties, with particular emphasis on semiconductor cooperation and resilient supply chains in the Indo-Pacific.

The visit centers on ramping up economic relations, including Tokyo increasing investment into India toward a promised USD 61 billion over the next decade and efforts to expand bilateral trade beyond the current USD 27.5 billion. Japan is among the largest investors in Indian infrastructure projects, such as the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train, with another Delhi-Kolkata line via Varanasi planned.

Several semiconductor-related initiatives are highlighted. Tata Electronics has partnerships with Japanese firms: a strategic partnership with ROHM Co. announced on December 22, 2025, under which Tata will provide backend packaging, assembly, and testing services in India for ROHM’s automotive-grade silicon MOSFETs used in electric vehicles and industrial equipment. Tokyo Electron signed an MoU with Tata Electronics on September 10, 2024, to supply advanced fabrication and packaging equipment for Tata’s semiconductor facilities in Dholera, Gujarat, and Jagiroad, Assam, along with workforce training.
