STMicroelectronics Launches Matter 1.5 NFC Chip for Simplified Smart Home Device Onboarding
STMicroelectronics has introduced the ST25DA-C, a secure NFC chip that supports Matter 1.5 for one-step integration of smart home devices. The chip enables users to add items such as lighting, access control, and security cameras to home networks by tapping a smartphone, drawing on the open-source Matter standard for secure and reliable connectivity.
The ST25DA-C is the first commercial chip to implement Matter 1.5 enhancements, which facilitate NFC-based onboarding comparable to phone payments. This allows commissioning of multiple devices simultaneously, including battery-less options powered by the phone's RF field.
David Richetto, Group VP and Division General Manager of Connected Security at STMicroelectronics, stated: βThe integration of NFC-based onboarding in Matter 1.5 is a timely enhancement to the smart home experience. Our market-first ST25DA-C chip leverages this capability to simplify device commissioning through tap-to-pair functionality. This reduces setup complexity, especially for installations that are difficult to access, thanks to NFC-enabled battery-less connectivity. This aligns well with the broader momentum in the smart home market to serve consumers who increasingly prioritize ease of use, interoperability, and security. NFC-enabled Matter devices are positioned to play a key role in driving even greater adoption.β
