OMNIVISION Introduces OV50R Image Sensor with Advanced HDR for Smartphone and Action Camera Applications
OMNIVISION launched OV50R CMOS image sensor, designed for high-end smartphones, action cameras, vlog cameras, and pocket cameras. The 50-megapixel sensor, featuring a 1.2-micron pixel and a 1/1.3-inch optical format, delivers an ultra-high dynamic range (HDR) of up to 110 decibels for video and preview with single exposure, alongside fast autofocus and high frame rates.
The OV50R supports 4-cell binning for 12.5MP at 120 frames per second (fps) and 4K at 60 fps with three-channel HDR, providing 4x sensitivity for low-light performance. It enables 8K video with dual analog gain (DAG) HDR and on-sensor crop zoom. Compared to the previous-generation OV50K TheiaCel sensor, the OV50R reduces power consumption by approximately 20%, supporting longer HDR video capture. The sensor incorporates second-generation TheiaCel technology and 100% coverage quad phase detection (QPD) for autofocus.
Keneki Kure, Mobile Product Marketing Director at OMNIVISION, stated, “OMNIVISION introduced a TheiaCel sensor to the mobile market, the OV50X, for flagship smartphones in April 2025. With the launch of the OV50R, we are further expanding the TheiaCel product family, offering our patented technology to a broader range of smartphones. The OV50R is designed for high-end main cameras, enabling superior video and photo capture around the clock, even in challenging lighting conditio...
