Digi International Introduces XBee for Wi-SUN to Enable Scalable IoT Mesh Networking for Smart Cities and Industry

Digi International announced the upcoming availability of the Digi XBee for Wi-SUN solution, designed to support interoperable and secure IP-based mesh networking for smart city, utility, renewable energy, and industrial IoT applications. Built on the IEEE 802.15.4g standards and supported by the Wi-SUN Alliance with over 300 members, Wi-SUN technology enables self-healing wireless mesh networks, with over 100 million devices deployed globally in mission-critical applications.

The solution includes modules, border routers, and network management tools. The Digi XBee for Wi-SUN modules, based on Silicon Labs’ EFR32 platform, function as smart mesh nodes with MicroPython edge processing and optional Bluetooth LE for sensor connectivity or provisioning. Digi XBee Hive Border Routers serve as network gateways with LTE, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet connectivity, supporting container-based edge computing and IPv6/IPv4 address translation. Network management is facilitated by Digi Remote Manager for cloud-based device management, health monitoring, remote updates, and system integration via open APIs, alongside Digi XBee Studio for local development and field support.
