Bourns Unveils SE Series Mini-Breakers for USB-C 240W Power Delivery Protection

Bourns, has introduced the SE Series miniature Thermal Cutoff (TCO) Mini-Breaker devices, designed to support the 240 W USB Power Delivery (PD) standard, according to a company announcement. These surface-mount devices, with a footprint of 4.7 mm x 2.8 mm and a height of 1.23 mm, are Bourns’ smallest 54 V TCO Mini-Breakers.

The SE Series addresses safety demands for USB-C connectors, driven by the global rise in fast charging and high-power cables, as well as the European Union’s 2024 Common Charger Directive mandating USB-C for mobile phones, tablets, headphones, and other devices. Fast charging increases the risk of heat generation from connector ingress, and the SE Series provides overtemperature protection by detecting heat above preset limits and interrupting current to shut off the power line. This eliminates the need for additional integrated circuits or switches, reducing component count in designs.

The SE Series offers temperature settings from 72°C to 85°C, with a ±5°C tolerance, supporting the overtemperature protection required for fast charging. The devices are RoHS compliant and available now. Additional information can be found at bourns....
