Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has started mass production of the world’s first 0402-inch size (1.0 × 0.5 mm) multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) with a capacitance of 47µF. The new MLCC, available in two variants with distinct temperature characteristics, addresses the growing need for compact, high-capacitance components in high-performance IT applications, such as AI servers and data centers.
The increasing density of components in these devices requires optimized placement within limited PCB space, driving demand for smaller capacitors with higher capacitance and reliability under high-temperature conditions caused by heat from PCBs and integrated circuits. Murata’s proprietary technologies in ceramic dielectric layers and internal electrode miniaturization enable this 47µF MLCC in the 0402-inch size, reducing the mounting area by approximately 60% compared to its 0603-inch size counterpart with the same capacitance. It also offers 2.1 times the capacitance of Murata’s previous 22µF product in the same size.
The MLCC comes in two variants: the X5R (EIA) GRM158R60E476ME01, with an operating temperature range of -55 to +85°C, and the X6S (EIA) GRM158C80E476ME01, with a range of -55 to +105°C. The X6S variant’s ability to function at up to 105°C makes it suitable for placement near integrated circuits, enhancing device performance and integration. Both variants have a ±20% tolerance and a rated voltage of 2.5Vdc.
This development supports the miniaturization and functional improvement of electronic devices while reducing material usage and improving production efficiency, contributing to lower power consumption at Murata’s facilities and a reduced environmental impact.
