High capacitance density; 470 µF in a 7.3x 4.3x 2 mm polymer Al electrolytic

Date: 19/06/2023
In a situation where power electronics design engineers have limited space on the board but need to put in a bulky aluminium electrolytic capacitor for the sake of high capacitance. They wish smaller aluminium electrolytic capacitor available with high capacitance. That wish is fulfilled by the leading passive component manufacturer Murata.

Murata has developed a polymer aluminum electrolytic smoothing capacitor that deliver high capacitance of 470 µF in a D case (7.3 x 4.3 mm) with a maximum product height of 2.0 mm. Murata to start mass production of this capacitor in this month of June 2023.

Murata gave a good example of use of such capacitors in datacentre circuit boards, when it explains "The high-speed processing of increasingly larger volumes of data has been necessary at data centers. With this necessity, there is an increasing trend toward the implementation of not only high-performance networks and accelerators but also faster servers, which are the core equipment at data centers. However, this equipment consumes a large amount of current, and there are two issues that must be managed for stable operation: IC voltage fluctuation and IC heat generation. To solve these issues, it is necessary to both increase the capacitance of the capacitors used to suppress voltage fluctuations and to mount large, high-performance heat sinks (cooling units) on the Ics. Because conventional high-profile and high-capacitance capacitors placed near the IC would hit the heat sink, multiple low-profile yet low-capacitance capacitors are now arranged in a row for higher capacitance."

After studying such design issues Murata said it has developed a low-profile, high-capacitance, and low-ESR polymer capacitor that does not hit the heat sinks and also helps lower the number of components required. This capacitor not only reduces the amount of surface area required for mounting on electronic components, but also helps lower component costs.

Murata also claims this technologies more greener/environment friendly, where it says miniaturization of the products allows for reductions in the materials used and energy consumption during processing, helping to reduce the products’ environmental impact.

Some more Info:
Murata's polymer capacitor has the feature of low ESR, low impedance, and large scale. Furthermore, there is no DC bias characteristic of capacitance, and since temperature characteristics are also stable, it excels in the Ripple absorption, smoothness, and the transient response performance.

Therefore, it is suitable for smoothing of input-output current of various power supply circuits, and the backup use over the load change of the CPU circumference. This contributes to reduction of the number of parts, or reduction of substrate area.
