Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. has introduced four Automotive Grade optical sensors—the Vishay Semiconductors VCND2040X02, VCND2040SLX02, VCND2045X02 and VCND2045SLX02—for wear-free optical data communication at up to 6 Mbit/s. The sensors combine an infrared (IR) emitter and PIN photodiode in 4.4 mm x 2.25 mm x 1.9 mm surface-mount packages.

The AEC-Q102-qualified devices support decentralized communication between battery cells and system nodes. Vishay says the optical link is immune to EMC and EMI / RFI interference and more resilient to cyberattacks than other wireless RF technologies. Applications include battery cell monitoring and balancing, energy storage systems, industrial automation, optical switching, optical encoders and position sensors.

Key features of the sensors include two independent lenses; an integrated crosstalk barrier between the IR emitter and detector; free-to-air optical communication over short ranges, extendable with external secondary optics; optical-fiber data transmission over several meters, including through complex routing paths, bends and confined spaces with minimal energy loss; and a wettable flank lead frame for side-view or top-view mounting. The devices are RoHS-compliant, halogen-free and Vishay Green, with a Moisture Sensitivity Level (MSL) of 3.

Samples and production quantities are available now, with lead times of eight weeks.
