TDK Corporation has announced worldwide distribution availability of its InvenSense PositionSense, a two-chip nine-axis sensor solution for absolute orientation detection and navigation in wearables, robotics, drones and mobile devices. The solution integrates a 6-axis IMU and a 3-axis magnetometer with on-chip sensor fusion and calibration software.

PositionSense combines TDK’s 6-axis SmartMotion IMU, which the company describes as its lowest-power IMU, with a 3-axis magnetometer based on tunnel magneto resistance (TMR) sensor technology. TDK says the magnetometer provides high sensitivity and accuracy, along with magnetic field shock resistance. On-chip sensor fusion software enables fast and accurate 9-axis sensor calibration.

The solution is available in four hardware configurations, each with on-chip sensor fusion, gyro-assisted calibration and an easy-to-integrate design for always-on sensing. The ICM-45608 + ICT-15318 supports I2C/SPI/I3C at 1.8V VDDIO and has a 16g/2000dps accelerometer/gyroscope full-scale range; the ICM-45608 + ICT-15312 supports I2C/SPI at 1.2V VDDIO and has the same full-scale range. The ICM-45689 + ICT-15318 and ICM-45689 + ICT-15312 have an extended ±4000 dps gyroscope and ±32 g accelerometer full-scale range for high-dynamic motion; they support I2C/SPI/I3C at 1.8V VDDIO and I2C/SPI at 1.2V VDDIO, respectively.

Key features include high sensitivity and accuracy, low noise and a wide range; a vibration-resistant gyro with BalancedGyro technology; on-chip sensor fusion and precise time synchronization for processing sensor data at the exact moment of motion; fast and accurate gyro and magnetometer cross-calibration; and automatic magnetic shock recovery.
