Aeonsemi Launches LumaReach, a Chip That Brings Fiber-Speed Internet Over Existing Coax Cable

Aeonsemi, a company focused on mixed-signal and DSP connectivity chips, has introduced LumaReach, described as the first commercially available chip that delivers 10 Gbps Ethernet over standard coaxial cable. The idea is to let service providers offer fiber-level speeds and latency without having to run new fiber all the way to the home, instead reusing the RG6 and RG59 coax cabling already installed in an estimated 150 million homes across North America and Europe.

The core product, called the AS27010, is a point-to-point, full-duplex network controller chip that works over standard 75-ohm coax with the same F-type connectors historically used for cable TV and MoCA networking. It delivers symmetrical 10 Gbps over a single coax run, meaning upload and download speeds are equally fast, and can reach up to 20 Gbps of combined bidirectional throughput. It also supports Power-over-Coax, so equipment out at the pedestal, demarc point, or remote endpoint can be powered through the same cable rather than needing a separate AC power source.

Mike Hansen, senior product line manager at Aeonsemi, framed the problem this solves as a last-mile bottleneck: even as fiber networks push deeper into neighborhoods, the final stretch of cabling into individual homes is often decades-old and limits what providers can offer.
