Why mature nodes still matter for most designs

The semiconductor press is dominated by AI chip announcements at 3nm and below. But the vast majority of chips shipping in 2026 includes automotive microcontrollers, industrial sensors, display driver ICs, power management units, networking ASICs are designed on 22nm to 40nm nodes. This is UMC’s home turf, and the Taiwanese foundry has spent the last five years making it significantly more capable than it used to be.
