MEMS sensor devices: Selection specifications, vendors and products-P4

MEMS Oscillator
:

Introduction: MEMS Oscillators are timing devices that generate highly stable reference frequencies. They can be programmed for any signaling level such as LVPECL, LVDS, CML, HCSL, LVCMOS, etc. MEMS Oscillators are said to offer 10x more robustness and reliability than quartz crystal oscillators. They feature up to 70kG and 50kG shock vibrations, eliminates any start-up issues and frequency dips when compared to quartz crystal oscillators.

Key Specifications:
Output Compatibility:
Single-ended, differential or differential + single-ended

Examples:
LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signaling)
LVPECL (Low Voltage Positive Emitter Coupled Logic)
HCSL (High Speed Current Steering Logic)
CML (Current Mode Logic)
LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signaling)

Frequency Range: The range of frequencies for which the oscillator works.

Temperature Stability: Refers to how much the oscillator frequency varies over the operating temperature range of the device.

Note: The stability rating between 20 to 100 PPM is required in applications such as consumer electronics, microprocessor based clocking and multi-protocol serial interfaces, while a rating of less than 50 PPM is chosen for telecom, broadband, video and instrumentation applications.

Jitter Performance: Period jitter describes how much any period may deviate from the ideal clock period and is used to determine the setup/hold time margin within a digital system. It is related to phase noise and a low noise output stage is required to achieve good period of jitter performance.
