Semiconductor revenue update this week: Ambarella and Sigma Designs

High-definition image processing semiconductor chip designer Ambarella reported revenue of $57.2 million for its first quarter of fiscal 2017 ending 30th of April 2016, down 19.5% from $71.0 million in the same period in fiscal 2016. Ambarella introduced its first 14nm IP camera SoC and is focusing on new 4K and HEVC SoC families across all market segments.

Fermi Wang, CEO of Ambarella. said "While near term headwinds continue in the wearable sports camera market, and we expect some adverse impact to our business caused by the disruption in supply of Sony image sensors to our customers as a result of the April 2016 Japanese earthquake, we remain confident of renewed revenue growth based on our technology leadership, product roadmap and the potential of our current and future markets."

Sigma Designs reported net revenue of $53.8 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2017 ending 30th of April, up by 4.5% from $51.5 million reported in the previous quarter, and down $2.1 million, or 3.8%, from $55.9 million reported in the same period in fiscal 2016.

Sigma Designs says its connected Smart TV Platforms business grew nearly 10% over last quarter. Both Ambarella and Sigma Designs are fabless semiconductor companies.
