2.2 Amp rated single coil fan and pump driver chip for home appliances

Melexis announces a new single coil fan and pump driver chip MLX90412 which can drive currents up to 2.2 A with maximum power rating of 35 W for applications such as home appliances and industrial electronics.

Complementing Melexis' MLX90411, the MLX90412 can operate from a voltage range of 3.5-32 V and can even withstand well up to 40 V, making it a good choice for 12 V and 24 V power supplies. It is also suitable for portable applications with up to seven Li-ion cells (~29 V). Some of the typical suggested examples include drain pumps for washing machines and dish washers, as well as toilet pumps; fans, blowers and cross blowers in air conditioning units, desk fans and pedestal fans; and Li-ion based applications including robot cleaners and robot lawn mowers.

High torque with low acoustic noise, and low vibration of motors can be taken care by choosing the option of multiple motor commutation. High efficiency is achieved by having low reverse current throughout the full speed range of the motor and without dependent on motor inductance or applied lead angle.

Other features as disclosed by Melexis includes:

  • Both open loop and closed loop speed control are possible, with a wide range of dynamic (PI) settings, for a speed range up to 45,000 e-rpm (electrical RPM).
  • The closed loop speed control allows the speed tolerance to be reduced to as low as +/- 3%. In combination with the low acoustic noise current shaping.
  • Melexis claims MLX90412 offers unprecedented noise performance in this price segment, making it a cost-effective alternative to the expensive 3-phase solution in many challenging applications.
  • In pump applications, the closed loop can also be used as no-load or run-dry protection, to help avoid running pumps at excessive speeds, preventing high audible noise, and early failure.
  • The protection features include locked rotor, over temperature, overvoltage, short circuit and current limiting, as well as built-in supply clamping.
  • Similar to the MLX90411, the MLX90412 is programmable via an I2C interface and all options are configurable in the on-board EEPROM. The MLX90412 is available in a 3mm x 3mm DFN10 package.
