Freescale adds 6W RF power device for mobile radio

Freescale Semiconductor has introduced a new 6W device for handheld mobile radio applications called the AFT05MS006N. With this offering, Freescale claims it is the only supplier capable of supporting all power levels of relevance to the mobile radio space, from 5W handheld units to 75W digital mobile radios and base stations.

“With a product family that spans the handheld, mobile and base station segments of the land mobile market, the breadth of the Airfast RF power solutions portfolio enables the reuse of designs across a range of mobile radio offerings, speeding time to market and increasing both efficiency and productivity.”

Ruggedized 6W AFT05MS006N is also suggested as a driver in higher powered mobile radio solutions. The 6W AFT05MS006N integrates circuitry to increase stability.

“Freescale’s new 6W device provides the high performance, small size, and improved output power designers need to meet increasingly stringent requirements for next-generation mobile radio products,” said Ritu Favre, senior vice president and general manager of Freescale’s RF Division. “With a product family that spans the handheld, mobile and base station segments of the land mobile market, the breadth of the Airfast RF power solutions portfolio enables the reuse of designs across a range of mobile radio offerings, speeding time to market and increasing both efficiency and productivity.”

The newest addition to the Airfast RF power solution portfolio is designed to survive > 65:1 VSWR, even with simultaneous overvoltage and overdrive stressing the amplifier and its RF power transistors. Additionally, the efficiency of the Airfast devices is on average 65 percent, an improvement when compared to module-based solutions, which typically range from 25 to 40 percent in efficiency, as per Freescale.

Product specifications of AFT05MS006N:

The new Airfast RF power LDMOS device is housed in the PLD-1.5W package. Other features include:
Survives > 65:1 VSWR with simultaneous overvoltage and overdrive
High power gain of greater than 16 dB for fewer stages and improved stability
High efficiency of greater than 60 percent simplifies cooling and enables smaller radio form factors
Reference circuits available for VHF, UHF and 800 MHz bands

Availability: The AFT05MS006N and AFT09MS015N are available in production quantities now.
