big. LITTLE combi SoC of 4 ARM Cortex A15s and 4 A7s for efficient multitasking

Date: 15/03/2013
If the smart phone user want to do 8 simultaneous tasks at a time, there is a new SoC chip from Samsung to handle that in power efficient mode. Samsung has adopted ARM's big. LITTLE concept of smart need based multi-core processing to share the computing resources effectively on Silicon. The Exynos 5 Octa application processor has four ARM Cortex A15 processors with capabilities to handle big tasks and it has four ARM Cortex A7 processors to handle smaller tasks. With smart phone explored for e-transaction, e-identification, health monitoring and newly fast emerging Internet of Things (IoT) applications, there are more chances of higher than 4 multitasks at a time. Samsung is addressing this demand by launching this 8-core app processor.

Samsung Electronics is making available this new Exynos 5 Octa application processor in volumes in the 2nd Q of 2013.

Samsung claims big.LITTLE concept approach offers up to 70 percent energy saving when performing various tasks, compared to using Cortex- A15 cores only. Exynos 5 Octa application processor and such next generation SoCs are the right devices for deeper nodes such as 28nm, 20nm and even 14nm. All that HKMG, FinFET, and multi(double/triple) patterning are for multi-core SoC with 8+ processor cores.

The Samsung Exynos 5 Octa enhances the powerful 3D graphics processing and capable of supporting WQXGA (2560x1600) display.

Exynos 5 Octa also supports e-MMC (embedded multimedia card) 5.0 and USB 3.0 interface.

Samsung Exynos 5 Octa features full HD 60fps video hardware codec engine for 1080p video recording and play-back, embedded 13 mega-pixel 30fps image signal processor interface, and 12.8GB/s memory bandwidth interface that enables Full HD Wifi display.
