Optically isolated SCR AC-power relay
with zero-cross circuitry
IXYS subsidiary Clare has made available CPC1998, a 5Arms
AC solid state switch utilizing dual optically isolated
power SCRs, as an integrated alternative to discrete optocoupler
and Triac circuits.
CPC1998 provides a load voltage switching capability up
to 800Vp. In addition the zero cross
circuitry ensures AC load switching while minimizing the
generation of Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) emissions.
Optically coupled circuitry provides high noise immunity
and 2500Vrms of isolation between the low voltage control
and the high voltage output. Additionally, the 150Amp surge
rating enables the CPC1998 to handle a variety of resistive
and reactive loads. As a result, the robust CPC1998 is well
suited for industrial environments where electromagnetic
interference would disrupt facility operations.
The CPC1998 comes in the unique i4-PAC package pioneered
by IXYS which allows Clare's Solid State Relays (SSRs) to
achieve the highest load current and power ratings.
This package features a unique IXYS process in which the
silicon chips are soft soldered
onto the Direct Copper Bond (DCB) ceramic substrate instead
of the traditional copper
leadframe. The DCB ceramic substrate provides 2500Vrms isolation
and low thermal resistance of 0.35°C/W.
Minimum input control current to the input infrared LED
for switching is 5mA. Applications include: power management,
motor control, heat coil control, valve and solenoid control,
robotics, IT and server power supplies, medical equipment,
railroad and traffic controls, consumer electronics, industrial
controls, and test and measurement equipment. The CPC1998,
available in the i4-PAC package, is a UL 508 Recognized
component for industrial control equipment.
"This product from Clare expands the family of power
SSRs that can be used with the Zilog (also an IXYS company)
family of MCUs for power management applications in order
to control power to loads. It is of special importance for
energy saving applications to reduce the power consumption
in systems by turning off the power to loads as needed,"
commented Dr. Nathan Zommer, CEO of IXYS Corporation.
