New over-voltage protectors MAX4978 and MAX4981with active current limiting from MAXIM

Maxim Integrated Products introduced two new ICs MAX4978 & MAX4981 termed as over-voltage protectors with active current limiting. Designed to protect the charger input port of portable devices, these devices are ideal for cell phones, MP3 players, digital still cameras (DSCs), and PDAs.
They protect low-voltage systems against voltage faults up to 28V with customer-selectable 5.7V and 6.8V threshold options. The active current limiter provides a second layer of defense for the protected device and is available in 0.9A and 1.95A threshold options.

Some of the other features include:

1. Provides ±15kV ESD input protection when a 1µF ceramic capacitor is connected from VIN to ground.
2. Extended temperature range of -40°C to +85°C

3. Include battery-overcharge protection, which monitors the voltage on the Li-ion battery being charged.
4. Once this monitored voltage reaches 4.4V, the switch is disconnected automatically to avoid overcharging.

Package: lead-free TDFN with an exposed pad

Prices: start at $1.47 for 1K pieces of quantity
