Radius to use Ericsson's GPON in its broadband sys in India

India's fixed broadband infrastructure provider Radius has signed a new contract with Ericsson to procure Ericsson's EDA 1500 GPON (Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Networks) system and passive fiber portfolio. Ericsson says this technology can also be used for building services such as parking management, access control, automated lighting, and security services through a single integrated infrastructure. The infrastructure is open and shared so that service providers can easily access services and customers can select the providers that best suit their needs.

Gowton Achaibar, head of Region India, Ericsson, says: "This agreement confirms the great potential for GPON / FTTx technology in India. We expect that by 2015 more than two million Indian homes and businesses will be connected to high speed broadband using GPON technology."

Radius Infratel has a pan-India presence and expects to connect at least 50,000 premises using FTTH architecture every year.
