Panasonic Integrates ST's Edge AI in its TiMO A e-assisted bike

Date: 09/04/2024
Panasonic has collaborated with STMicroelectronics to enhance the safety and convenience of their TiMO A e-assisted bike. By adopting ST's STM32F3 microcontroller and edge AI development tool, STM32Cube.AI, Panasonic has introduced a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) with advanced AI functionality, ensuring rider safety and ease of maintenance.

AI-Enabled TPMS: The TiMO A e-assisted bike utilizes ST's STM32F3 MCU and STM32Cube.AI to implement an AI-based tire pressure monitoring system. This innovative solution accurately infers tire air pressures without requiring pressure sensors, enhancing rider safety and prolonging the life of cycle components.

Cost-effective Design: Panasonic benefits from the cost competitiveness of ST's STM32F3 MCU, which provides optimal functions and performance for e-assisted bikes. The integration of STM32Cube.AI enables the implementation of the AI function without hardware modifications, reducing costs and design complexity.

Mission fulfillment: Panasonic is committed to delivering environmentally friendly and safe transportation solutions. By leveraging ST's edge AI solutions, they aim to expand the range of models with AI functions, further enhancing their mission to provide accessible and comfortable transportation for all.

Global proliferation of Edge AI: ST is actively promoting the global adoption of edge AI solutions across various industries. This collaboration with Panasonic represents a significant milestone in their efforts to introduce AI functionalities into diverse products, contributing to the augmentation of daily life.

Showcase at AI Expo: ST will showcase their edge AI solutions, including the STM32 MCU and AI development tools, at the AI Expo in Tokyo. The TiMO A e-assisted bike, featuring STM32F3 MCU and STM32Cube.AI, will be on display, highlighting the successful implementation of AI in Panasonic's innovative transportation solution.

“We develop and manufacture e-assisted bikes with the mission of delivering environmentally friendly, safe, and comfortable transportation, accessible to all,” said Mr. Hiroyuki KAMO, Manager, Software Development Section, Development Department of Panasonic Cycle Technology. “ST’s STM32F3 MCU provides cost competitiveness and optimal functions and performance for e-assisted bikes. By combining the STM32F3 MCU with STM32Cube.AI, we were able to implement the innovative AI function without the need to change hardware. We will continue to increase the range of models with AI functions and strive to fulfill our mission by leveraging ST’s edge AI solutions.”

“ST has been actively working on the global proliferation of edge AI in both hardware and software, providing edge AI solutions to a wide range of products including industrial and consumer equipment,” said Marc Dupaquier, Managing Director Artificial Intelligence Solutions, STMicroelectronics. “This collaboration marks a key step in our efforts, and we are delighted to have contributed to the first implementation of this AI function in Panasonic’s e-assisted bike. We will continue to propose AI use cases and solutions for diverse markets, anywhere we can help to augment our life.”
