Automotive car-body power-management Ics integrate CAN FD and LIN

Date: 11/10/2023
STMicroelectronics' automotive power-management Ics seamlessly integrate CAN FD and LIN, streamlining car-body controllers. The SPSB081 with range of features makes it a versatile solution for various applications.

Features include a primary fixed-voltage low-dropout regulator (LDO), a secondary programmable LDO, four high-side drivers, a CAN FD transceiver, and an optional LIN transceiver. The Ics also offer multiple standby modes with exceptionally low quiescent current, as well as the ability to program local or remote wake-up, thereby aiding in the reduction of power consumption.

The device offers comprehensive built-in protection, including a diagnostic output pin for fail-safe signaling. These features make it suitable for use in applications that need to meet functional safety requirements outlined in ISO 26262, even if it is not specifically designed as a safety hardware component. All outputs are equipped with overcurrent protection and open-load fault indication.

The SPSB081C3 and SPSB081C5 are equipped with a fixed 3.3V or 5V LDO, respectively, along with a single CAN transceiver. In addition to these, the SPSB0813 and SPSB0815 models also feature an additional LIN transceiver.Furthermore, each channel is equipped with four high-side drivers capable of sourcing up to 140mA to power LEDs and sensors. These drivers also offer current monitoring and a 10-bit PWM timer.

The inclusion of on-chip power sources and transceivers greatly facilitates the design process for car-body controllers, specifically for sunroofs, seats, tailgates, doors, and lighting modules. These controllers exhibit remarkable adaptability as they find application not only in car-body systems but also in gateways, HVAC controllers, passive keyless entry systems, telematic control units, and control panels.

All variants include a secondary LDO that can be programmed via the IC's SPI port to function as an independent 3.3V or 5V regulator, or to track the main LDO.
The SPSB081 family is AEC-Q100 qualified, specified from -40°C to 150°C, and able to operate up to 175°C. All variants are in production and available in a thermally enhanced 5mm x 5mm x 1mm QFN32L package, from $1.80 for orders of 1000 pieces.
