Facial recognition-based biometric authentication expands to ATMs

Date: 08/07/2017
Facial recognition biometrics for bank ATMs is gaining importance due to it's easy and best authentication security. Combined with some other biometrics such as fingerprint, the ATM user does not require password or pin and even the card.

To give an example of how the user uses ATM by using biometric authentication, the user waves the mobile device close to near field communications (NFC) reader on the ATM, then the user will be prompted to complete authentication via facial recognition on their mobile device. It's secure faster and also simpler compared to entering password and other details.

Diebold Nixdorf and Samsung have recently demonstrated facial recognition biometric authentication for cordless ATM transactions. The demonstration utilises FIDO compliant biometric authentication platform. FIDO Alliance is developing technical specifications that define an open, scalable, interoperable set of mechanisms that reduce the reliance on passwords to authenticate users. Facial recognition is already being used at airports for the security checks. With wider adoption, facial recognition technology to grow significantly faster in 2017 and 2018 and further.
