Ricoh develops electronic paper with improved brightness and color ability

Ricoh Company says by utilizing its original display method, it has achieved a display of color still images with about 2.5 times brighter (in white reflectivity) and about 4 times wider color reproduction range compared with presently commercialized or announced color electronic paper technologies.

Ricoh's electronic paper displays content with out power and it requires power only for re-writing characters and images. Electronic paper is more environmental friendly and gentle to human eye. It can replace millions of monochrome display devices and it can also save the cost as well as the negative effect on the environment. The problem with present electronic paper is lack of brightness and color reproduction. Ricoh is trying to address that by developing a display of more brightness and ability to display colors.

Ricoh has used new organic electrochromic material to produce three primary colors (Cyan, Magenta and Yellow). This display uses simple laminating element structure, to form three electrochromic layers between two substrates.

Ricoh is still working on improving reliability/repetition durability for larger screen sizes. The aim is to display fine characters of document.
