Semtech acquired Power Line Communications and Smart Grid company EnVerv. Semtech expects the acquisition to be neutral to its full year Fiscal 2016 results.
Power Line Communications (PLC) technology is becoming one of the best communications option for reading and connecting to Smart Meters. Semtech says its LoRa platform and PLC technology is complementary in metering, machine to machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT) markets.
"We are pleased to welcome the EnVerv team to Semtech. The acquisition is consistent with our philosophy of acquiring key system level competencies that position Semtech for future growth in targeted application segments. PLC technology is highly complementary to our current wireless LoRa solutions and expands Semtech's available market beyond the industrial wireless segment into the industrial PLC market and the residential gateway market. We believe that the Smart Home and the Smart Grid are still in their early stages of global development, and having both PLC and wireless technologies positions us well to take advantage of both segments," said Mohan Maheswaran, President and Chief Executive Officer of Semtech Corporation.
In another announcement Semtech said it has teamed up with Link Labs for the LL-LP-20 radio module featuring Semtech’s LoRa long distance radio transceiver technology. The Link Labs LL-LP-20, is a compact, low power, bidirectional radio module for the 915 MHz ISM band and 868 MHz frequency band, and features the LoRaMAC software stack for integration with the LoRa partner ecosystem. LL-LP-20 is fully FCC/IC certified for immediate use in the US and Canada.
Semtech has also recently joined with other members of the Wi-SUN Alliance to produce a radio frequency (RF) development platform targeting advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and industrial applications.
