EMU In-Home Display from Rainforest earns
ZigBee Smart Energy product certification
Rainforest Automation wins ZigBee Smart Energy product
certification for its EMU Energy Monitoring Unit product.
The EMU is an In-Home Display that communicates directly
with smart meters that have been equipped with ZigBee Smart
Energy wireless capability, and shows homeowners their energy
consumption information in real time.
Rainforest Automation says, the EMU conforms to the DoE
standards for the hundreds of Smart Grid projects rolling
out across the country.
"Not only does the EMU meet the standard to communicate
with smart meters in the U.S. Smart Grid, but it sets a
new standard for affordability in the utility supply chain,"
said Chris Tumpach, president of Rainforest Automation.
"The EMU was Designed-To-Cost from the outset, which
sets it apart from other products in the space, that need
to be scaled down to meet utility budget constraints."
One of the keys to meeting the EMU requirements in terms
of features, power consumption and price target was choosing
the right partner. "Our development team worked very
closely with Rainforest Automation to help them achieve
this high level of soft and hardware integration" said
Jim Lindop, CEO of Jennic, whose JN5148 Wireless Microcontroller
was selected as the heart of the design.
"The EMU is the first Smart Energy HAN device certified
using the JN5148. It is a great example that demonstrates
the value of using our fully integrated solution."
"We needed a partner that could support us throughout
our development cycle," said Chris Tumpach, "and
Jennic's excellent support team worked with us as if they
were members of our own development team."
The EMU takes advantage of the low power consumption of
the JN5148, and is able to provide two years of normal use
with a single set of AA batteries. This allows the EMU to
be placed in any convenient location, without being tied
to an electrical outlet.
