QNX Neutrino RTOS supports Cavium's OCTEON Plus multi-core processors

The QNX Neutrino RTOS, a multiprocessing operating system now supporting the Cavium Networks' OCTEON Plus CN56XX and CN57XX family of multi-core MIPS64 processors.

The OCTEON Plus 56XX and CN57XX family of multi-core MIPS64 processors targets processing requirements for mid-range to high-end storage switches, arrays, appliances, networking equipment, and servers.

Cavium says, With eight to 12 cnMIPS64 cores at up to 800 MHz speed on a single chip, the CN57XX family integrates high-density, high-bandwidth standard interfaces along with advanced storage RAID, security, network services, and storage application acceleration, and offers a better performance, power, and real estate value proposition over alternatives.

The QNX Neutrino RTOS supports dynamic upgrades, fine-grained fault isolation, and rapid error recovery. With native multi-core support (SMP, BMP) and transparent distributed processing, it also offers scalability, allowing networking elements to handle increases in traffic or services without forklift upgrades.

"Cavium's OCTEON multi-core MIPS64 processors are being shipped by all major Tier-1 networking, wireless, and storage vendors as part of a range of market-leading products," said Rajiv Khemani, vice president and general manager, networking & communications division, Cavium Networks. "We are happy that QNX Software Systems is now offering our customers a world-class, proven multi-core realtime operating system on our OCTEON Plus processor family. This will deliver a powerful, pre-integrated solution that will reduce time to market for our joint customers."

"Because of its pioneering work in multiprocessing, QNX Software Systems is the only realtime operating system vendor with a mature, field-proven solution for multi-core networking applications," said Sebastien Marineau, vice president of engineering, QNX Software Systems. "We are excited to work with Cavium Networks in bringing the QNX Neutrino RTOS to their high-performance, low-power multi-core platform for networking applications."
