Taiwan semiconductor fabs showing more love towards sun and light

As semiconductor fab businesses turning more competitive, the Taiwanese semiconductor fab companies are looking towards sun; that's all about solar and light, otherwise solar PV cells and White LEDs.

In less than a month Taiwanese semiconductor fabs both TSMC and UMC have announced fresh investment and establishment of new businesses to produce Solar PV cells and White LEDs.

TSMC board of directors on Aug 11 2009 have approved US$50 million on solar and white LED products. A similar move was followed by UMC, UMC has approved the establishment of New Business Development Center and its 100% owned subsidiary, UMC New Business Investment Corporation to focus exclusively on green technologies. Wen Yang Chen, senior vice president of UMC, will be responsible for New Business Development Center.

This is a good move, a win-win solution for all. World desperately needs environment friendly power. Solar PV and White LEDs are out of the labs with full commercial capability and viability.

Next decade looks to be a green semiconductor decade. The reason is green is money.
