Wipro pumps more investment into product R&D

Wipro has launched a well-equipped testing facility called Tarang (Sanskrit word for wave) for Indian as well as global OEMs and developers. This looks to be the most updated testing facility in India with range of test services for products covering from cars to semiconductor devices.

India's well-known scientist and former President A P J Abdul Kalam inaugurated Wipro's Tarang facility. He shared his bit of product testing and development experience during his young times at ISRO and DRDO to the young and talented engineers and scientists of Wipro and to the other invitees. He also stressed the importance of test facility for a region like India.

Wipro's Chairman Azim Premji said, investment in product R&D is important for economies like India, and during this period of world economy's transition it's even more important.

To address the woefully inadequate product R&D infrastructure situation in India, Wipro invested in to this new testing facility. The total investment in this facility is around 8.5 million US$.

Girish Paranjpe, joint CEO, IT business, Wipro, said, this facility is designed by keeping engineers in mind. The way they design and the quality and approval issues they face are key considerations in designing this facility. Wipro is also providing a small consultancy team for tuning or redesigning the system under test to get qualified faster.

Tarang facility will provide testing services in the area of EMI/EMC, mechanical, thermal, acoustic, safety and reliability. The applications covered include aerospace, automotive, industrial, medical, telecom, computer, and consumer.

Indian companies covering government PSUs to small and medium enterprises can benefit from this facility by availing testing services locally instead of getting it done at offshore places. The other such facility in India is Government owned SAMEER-CEM at Chennai.

The equipments at Tarang support testing of complete products, subsystems and also the semiconductor and electronic components. On the semiconductor front, Wipro is already partnered with Tessolve in providing testing services.

On the question of economy recovery Girish Paranjpe commented, with some visibility of stability, few positive things are expected in next quarter but he warns it may take time to see the impressive growth.

With the technology getting outdated faster, keeping the test equipment updated to latest technology and the new emerging applications is the big challenge for test equipment service providers. Particularly in RF systems, where the frequency of operation is expected tp go beyond 40 GHz. The test equipments got to be ready for such high microwave frequecies. Even at product level, major market changes throws a big challenge for testing. A petrol car emission is so different from electric car.
