Microsemi' PLC line driver and ST's STreamPlug SoC for charging Evs

A new electric vehicle (EV) car battery charger is designed using Microsemi's Microsemi Le87501 power line communication (PLC) line driver and the ST2100 STreamPlug SoC from ST, along with a new proprietary state Machine, event-driven- (SMED) based digital power controller and is supported by the OpenV2G software stack.

ST has selected Microsemi Le87501 PLC drivers for ST's reference designs based on ST2100 STreamPlug SoC products used in apps such as consumer home area networks (HANs), industrial and smart-grid applications.

"Microsemi's high-performance line drivers, along with the STreamPlug SoC, provide a world-class IoT total solution, enabling faster development of innovative power management systems," said Shahin Sadeghi, director of marketing and applications at Microsemi.

This is the first collaboration between ST and Microsemi targeting IoT. According to IDC, IoT technology and services spending will generate global revenues of $8.9 trillion by 2020, growing at a compound annual rate (CAGR) of 7.9 percent. Microsemi and ST are enabling additional capabilities with the use of the Microsemi Timberwolf audio processors for command and control as well as audio sensing. The Timberwolf DSP platform enables Microsemi to leverage its extensive expertise and leadership in voice communications to bridge into new and emerging hands-free applications that require clear speech, free of noise and echo.

"The ST2100-based platform was developed to enable industrial IoT applications," said Oleg Logvinov, director Special Assignments for Industrial and Power Conversion Division, STMicroelectronics. "Its value to the market is being clearly demonstrated in its adoption by Microsemi and Tatung to address new applications and markets that include electrical vehicle charging and the smart home."

These solutions are displayed at Microsemi suite and in ST's private suite in Las Vegas during the 2015 CES, Jan. 6-8, 2015 in the Embassy Suites Executive Boardroom, located at 3600 Paradise Road in Las Vegas.

Le87501 is a single channel line driver designed to work in HomePlug Alliance HPAV2 systems. When enabled, the operation can be set to full, 90 percent or 80 percent power. The Le87501can drive a line impedance of 100ohms down to 12ohms through a proper transformer. In addition, the Le87501 features a standby state which forces the driver into a long-term sleep mode.

The world's first intelligent-gateway SoC, ST's ST2100 supports HomePlug AV and HomePlug Green PHY. The STreamPlug SoC also integrates a PLC modem and analog front end.

STreamPlug ST2100 device is ST's broadband PLC solution, based on ARM926EJ-S processor (up to 333 MHz), widely used in applications where high computation performance is required, such as consumer HAN, industrial and smart grid applications.

In addition, the STreamPlug ST2100 has a memory management unit (MMU) that allows virtual memory management—making the system compliant with the Linux operating system. It also offers 16 Kbyte of data cache, 32 Kbyte of instruction cache, JTAG and ETM (Embedded Trace Macrocell) for debug operations.
