Advantech's suggestions for Windows XP embedded users

For embedded system boards Microsoft embedded channels to provide XP Pro product availability through December 31st, 2016, however Microsoft will no longer be issuing any security updates for the operating system. Advantech has given below points of advise for windows XP embedded users:

For customers who want keep their current XP Pro application setup, McAfee’s embedded whitelist control fits the bill, allowing only known good and trusted software to run. This is in contrast to standard antivirus technology which looks to stop execution of known bad software. Once a whitelist is created and enabled, the system is locked down to only the known good baseline; no program or code outside the authorized set can run, and no unauthorized changes can be made. This solution enables XP Pro-based applications to safely run on existing operating systems without additional risk or loss of control.

As an alternative to XP Pro, Windows Embedded OS is committed to fifteen years of product availability with ten years of support, and no-cost security updates. Windows Embedded Standard (WES 2009) is based upon Windows XP Pro SP3. Migrating to it is an alternative option for customers who don't want to stay with XP. Since applications are not always easy to modify, it’s sometimes difficult to migrate to Windows 7 or Window 8 in a short space of time. For customers facing these challenges WES 2009 is a good alternative.
WES 2009 provides a modular version of Windows XP that can be fully customized to include only the software needed for the customer’s application, eliminating extraneous programs and limiting possible security vulnerabilities.

Since WES 2009 is based upon Windows XP Pro SP3, any customer applications which can run on XP Pro can also be run on WES 2009. Migrating to WES 2009 is the best choice for customers who don’t want to change their application but still want to be able to have long-term technical support.

It’s time for everyone to start thinking about their future plans for an operating system beyond Windows XP. For customers still wanting to stay in the XP Pro world, and who worry about security and update issues, Advantech provides “McAfee Embedded Control” whitelist protection, allowing XP Pro to be sold until 2016. For customers who prefer to continue using their current application setup, they can migrate to WES 2009 without the need to change their applications. And for customers who would like to adopt the latest Intel chipsets, Advantech can provide the latest operating systems and technologies. As a Microsoft Embedded Gold Partner, Advantech provides Microsoft Windows OS Solutions that are complete and compatible with industrial platforms and systems. We fulfill the varied needs of our customers, and are committed to support a smooth migration path during this critical transition period.
