New 2-18 GHz broadband synthesizer for mil/aero

Date: 12/12/2013
API Technologies has announced that the first in a new series of broadband synthesizers ideally suited for military requirements and high-end commercial applications such as microwave receivers, microwave telemetry systems, uplink communication platforms, instrumentation, and military communication systems. API says the new 2-18 GHz broadband synthesizer features a wideband design with low phase noise and excellent broadband performance, and is packaged in a hermetic, laser-welded housing.

"This new synthesizer covers S, C, X, and Ku-bands and satisfies an industry need to achieve broadband high performance while maintaining low phase noise," said Ken Veith, Engineering Manager, RF/Microwave & Microelectronics (RF2M-US), API Technologies.

The synthesizer (Model BXFS1045) offers fast 65 µsec settling time, provides +13 dBm of output power from the +/- 6 and +5 volt supply, and delivers low phase noise performance (-81 dBc/Hz @ 10 KHz offset). With the flexibility to meet customer-specific requirements, the wideband synthesizer includes options for input voltages, output power, and frequency control. Using a hermetic laser-welded package, it can withstand extreme environmental conditions, including a wide temperature range (-40°C to +85°C), and is configurable for military airborne and ground-based applications.

“In addition, the synthesizer uses a 100 MHz internal reference, so an external frequency source is not needed,” added Veith. “An embedded microcontroller reads the digital tuning word and then calculates and loads the control words into the synthesizer’s registers.”
