ARM Cortex-A9 embedded Pico-ITX board supports Android and Ubuntu

Date: 24/10/2013
VIA Technologies has announced the quad core VIA VAB-820 Pico-ITX embedded ARM board. Featuring a 1GHz quad core Freescale iMX6Quad ARM Cortex-A9 processor, the VIA VAB-820 is optimized for applications such as industrial, energy management and in-vehicle applications.

With the total power consumption of less than 7W, VIA VAB-820 is designed to operate in the temperature range of -20 to 70 degrees Celsius.

VIA VAB-820 features three independent, fully-integrated GPUs and capture-in support to make it suitable for surveillance and building access systems. Also has optional PoE (power over Ethernet) to support any such requirement.

The VIA VAB-820 is available with board support packages (BSPs) for Android and Ubuntu operating systems.

“The VIA VAB-820 delivers our most powerful ARM–based platform for customers to leverage in developing innovative new connected devices,” said Epan Wu, Head of the VIA Embedded Platform Division, VIA Technologies, Inc. “As a leader in hardware and software support, VIA provides our customers the fastest path to market with the availability of starter kits, customization support, or offering complete systems for different applications.”

Based on the ultra compact Pico-ITX form factor, measuring 10 cm x 7.2 cm, the VIA VAB-820 combines a 1GHz quad core Freescale iMX6Quad ARM Cortex-A9 processor in a rugged, power efficient platform with a mere 7W TDP. Including dual independent display support and three independent, fully integrated GPUS, which provide the smoothest 3D/2D graphics acceleration for full HD playback support of the most demanding video formats, the VAB-820 offers outstanding multimedia performance.

Dual coastline I/O includes one HDMI port, two USB 2.0 ports, one MicroSD slot and one Gigabit Ethernet port. On-board features include up to 64GB eMMC Flash memory, 1GB DDR3 SDRAM, one USB 2.0 host port, one USB OTG port, one Mini PCI-e, two COM port pin headers, one CANbus, one dual channel LVDS connector, one S-video pin header and eight GPIO pin headers.

Sample units of the VIA VAB-820 Pico-ITX board are available now.
