Flicker less mains 230V-AC 45W LED drivers from Dialog Semiconductor

Date: 12/08/2013
Dialog Semiconductor has launched Flickerless 45W SSL LED Driver for commercial Lighting. This driver IC is developed by Dialog's recently acquired company iWatt.

iW3623 integrates boost and flyback converters in single IC and operates from a universal 100VAC to 277VAC mains input range. The boost controller does the power factor correction (PFC) and a flyback converter regulates LED current. iW3623 offers a high power factor of greater then 0.95 and low total harmonic distortion (THD) of <10%. Dialog says it's patented Flickerless design achieves a near-zero 100 to 120Hz output ripple and the built-in over-temperature protection (OTP) and derating enables lighting designers and also makes the LED lamp to last longer.

The suggested applications of iW3623 includes non-dimmable, commercial SSL downlight, PAR, T8, and flat panel ceiling lamp applications.

By controlling the power on the primary side of the switching transformer, iW3623 offers higher efficiency and also allows use of low cost bipolar junction transistors instead of FETs. iW3623 employs quasi-resonant mode switching for both the boost and flyback stages and dynamic base current to optimise conversion efficiency and minimise EMI.

To protect itself from the high-temperature the iW3623 features on-chip over-temperature protection and derating function that actually monitors the temperature inside the sealed LED lamp. The OTP feature is configured via an NTC resistor.
iWatt explains: When thermal conditions in the bulb reach the set temperature, the iW3623 automatically and incrementally reduces the current drive to the LEDs. This lowers the power dissipation, results in cooler operation, and ensures the temperature rating of the electrolytic capacitors in the system is not exceeded. This helps capacitors to last longer. When the temperature reaches extremely high iW3623 switches off the current to the LED.

The additional safety features include LED open/short circuit, single fault, over-current, current sense resistor short-circuit, input over-voltage, brown-out and AC line over-voltage/frequency protections. iW3623 goes into extended discharge mode during output over-voltage conditions, and recovers quickly so that it supports hot-plug LED modules without causing dangerously high output voltages.

iW3623 is compatible with Zhaga(2) hot-plug LED module for LED light interchangeability

iW3623 is available now in production quantities in a standard, 14-lead SOIC package and is priced at US $0.93 each in 1000-piece quantities.
