DirectDrive headphone amplifier IC from Maxim for portable multimedia devices

Maxim has introduces the MAX9820, a new stereo headphone amplifier IC that employs Maxim's patented DirectDrive architecture to eliminate clicks and pops, and the large output-coupling capacitors required by conventional single-supply headphone amplifiers. The MAX9820 also suppresses RF radiation, thus preventing the amplifier from demodulating the coupled noise. This low-cost, compact solution is suitable for portable multimedia devices such as cell phones, portable media players, PDAs, notebooks, mobile internet devices (MIDs), and other audio applications.

The key features of the MAX9820 IC are,

High RF Noise Rejection
Windows Vista Premium Mobile Compliant
2.7V to 5.5V Single-Supply Operation
95mW Output Power (32Ohm, VDD = 5V)
Low-Current Shutdown Mode, < 1µA
Low 3mA (VDD = 3.3V) Quiescent Current

The MAX9820 also integrates undervoltage lockout and protection against thermal overload and short-circuit events.

Operating temperature range: -40°C to +85°C

Package: 3mm x 3mm x 0.8mm, 10-pin TDFN package
Price: Starts at $0.44 for 1k pieces

Availability: An evaluation kit is available to speed designs
