1.8A DC-DC step-down converter for portable handheld apps

Maxim has introduced the MAX8649, a new 1.8A synchronous DC-DC step-down converter that delivers tight output-voltage accuracy by integrating a high precise bandgap reference and by minimizing offset errors in the feedback circuit. The MAX8649 allows applications processors to run at maximum clock speed in high-performance portable handset applications such as cell phones, smartphones, PDAs and MP3 players.

The MAX8649's operating input voltage ranges from 2.5V to 5.5V, and supports the new battery technologies. The output voltage is I²C programmable from 0.75V to 1.38V, fully differential remote sense ensures precise DC regulation at the load.

The key features of the MAX8649 dc-dc converter are,

On-chip FET and Synchronous Rectifier
Operates in 3.25MHz of fixed-frequency PWM mode or in power-save mode Synchronizes to 13MHz, 19.2MHz, or 26MHz system clock when available
Small 1.0µH inductor
0.5% of initial accuracy at 1.25V output
2% of output accuracy over load, line, and temperature
Power-save mode increases light load efficiency
Overvoltage and overcurrent protection
Soft-start, thermal shutdown protection
400kHz I²C interface
< 1µA of shutdown current

Operating temperature range: -40°C to +85°C

Package: 2.0mm x 2.0mm x 0.65mm, 16-bump WLP package
Price: Starts at $1.60 for 1k pieces
