Smart-reset chip from ST Micro to restart system-crashed phones and devices safely

ST Micro has introduced the STM65xx, a new family of smart-reset IC to overcome frozen/system-crashed phones and such software integrated devices. Normally when portable electronic device hangs, user tends to remove the battery to reset the system, which may not be safer for the system. This device allows the system to be restarted safely without removing the battery or finding a tool to push the reset button, usually hidden behind a hole in the casing. The STM65xx consists of low current microprocessor reset circuits targeted for MP3 players, portable navigation, mobile phones and other portable devices.

The STM65xx devices feature single or dual smart reset inputs (SRx) and the delayed smart reset setup time (tSRC) options of 0 s, 2 s, 6 s and 10 s (all min.) are adjustable by an external capacitor or resistor on the SRC pin or selectable by three-state logic. The delayed setup period ignores short switch closures shorter than tSRC, thus preventing unwanted resets.

The other key features of the STM65xx smart-reset IC are,

Operating input voltage ranges from 1.0 V to 5.5 V
Low supply current
Factory-programmable thresholds to monitor VCC in the range of 1.575 to 4.625 Vtyp
Open-drain, active-low reset output
Power-on reset
Prevents data loss and ensures data integrity
Ultra-low power consumption based on our zero-power expertise extends the battery life, which is ideal for Energy Star applications
Accidental system reset is prevented by using our protective dual-assert smart reset inputs

ST's STM65xx IC has two inputs that can be connected to two of the device's normal function buttons. When these are held down for a certain time, which is programmable, the IC will send a reset signal to the main processor. The two inputs and programmable delay time allow a combination of button presses and hold-down times to guard against unintended resets.

In addition, by allowing the manual reset to be controlled from the normal user buttons, where the STM65xx eliminate the hidden reset requiring an access hole in the casing and also provides to develop splash-resistant or waterproof new products.
