MEMS and Zigbee combined compact module for motion recognition

ST Microelectronics has launched a new module combining MEMS accelerometer sensor and a Zigbee SoC. Named as MotionBee, is a compact module to design wireless sensor networks for application areas such as medical electronics, security, industrial control and environmental monitoring.

The MotionBee packs ST's 3-axis digital-output MEMS accelerometer with a ZigBee platform from Zigbee expert Ember that includes the EM250 System-on-Chip, a 2.4GHz, IEEE 802.15.4-compliant radio transceiver and processor, together with the EmberZNet PRO ZigBee networking software. The module measuring 49 x 27 x 5 mm and can detect accelerations in the selectable range of +/-2g and +/- 6g and transmits the information to a central connection point in the form of star topology or every other node of a mesh topology in a ZigBee wireless network. This device can be used for designing wearable medical electronics equipments or sports equipment.
