Integrated analog -output signal conditioners from Maxim

Maxim has released the MAX15500/MAX15501 an integrated analog-output signal conditioners, which are ideal for PLC (programmable logic controller) analog outputs, distributed I/O, embedded systems, and industrial control and automation systems.

Key features are,

Power supplies operate from a ±24V industrial field supply
Up to ±32.5V supply voltage
Output is protected up to ±35V
Supports either +4.096V (MAX15500) or +2.5V (MAX15501) input signals
Programmable output (plus over-range capability): ±10V, 0 to 10V, 0 to 5V, ±20mA, 0 to 20mA, and 4 to 20mA
SPI interface, with daisy-chain capability
Active-low READY output for daisy chaining
DOUT for configuration readback for additional operational safety
Protection features: short-circuit and overcurrent protection, open-circuit detection, brownout detection, overtemperature protection, and additional operational safety
Analog output for load monitoring
Output drives 0 to 1k ohms in current mode
Voltage output drives loads down to 1k ohms
HART compliant
2ppm/°C gain-error drift over temperature
Fast, 40µs settling time

The MAX15500/MAX15501 simplify the design of PLC modules, and there is a need of precision-matched resistors to track voltages over temperature. The MAX15500/MAX15501 has integrated voltage amplifier and voltage-to-current converter to eliminate the need for those additional resistors. The control voltage is typically supplied by an external DAC with an output voltage range of 0 to 4.096V for the MAX15500, and 0 to 2.5V for the MAX15501, and the output current and voltage are selectable as either unipolar or bipolar.

These devices offer fault detection, and detect both the intermittent and permanent load faults. If a fault occurs, the open-drain fault-interrupt pin will be pulled low. The status of the fault bits is available through the SPI interface.

The MAX15500/MAX15501 are programmed through a 3-wire SPI-/QSPI-/MICROWIRE-/DSP-compatible serial interface with daisy-chain capability. For channel-isolated applications these devices uses a single device where as multiple devices for group-isolated applications. A device-ready logic output and two device-select inputs facilitate a daisy-chain arrangement for multiple device applications. A chain of MAX15500/MAX15501 devices can be terminated with any standard SPI-compatible single device. The MAX15500/MAX15501 portion of the chain continues to display timing parameters comparable to a single device.

Additionally, the MAX15500/MAX15501 outputs, power-supply inputs, and sense inputs are protected against overcurrent conditions, a short to ground, or supply voltages up to ±35V.

Operating temperature range: -40°C to +105°C

Package: ultra-small (5mm x 5mm) 32-pin TQFN package
Price: Starts at $2.96 for 1k pieces
