Embedded computer RuffSystem 840 from Adlink targets rugged applications

ADLINK's Ampro has released a new highly rugged embedded computer system based on the Intel core 2-duo processor. The RuffSystem 840 integrates a Core 2 Duo L7500 1.66GHz 45nm processor, 4GB DDR2 RAM, graphics, networking, and PCI Express expansion in a rugged enclosure with operating temperature of -40 to +75 degree C. This product is suggested for applications such as military, transportation monitoring and control systems, aviation, and other harsh environments.

"With its high level of integration, performance, reliability, and ruggedness, the RuffSystem 840 demonstrates leadership in extreme rugged computing," said Jeff Munch, CTO. "Our customers are excited about the new rugged embedded system for use in a wide range of applications, such as military multifunction control including C4ISR, mobile vehicle positioning, navigation, rugged data acquisition, and imaging devices."

The board's built-in graphics engine is driven by Intel's GMA X3100 with up to 384MB of 64-bit video RAM (DVMT4.0), and can drive all kinds of displays such as CRTs, LCD flat panels, and wide screen digital TVs at resolutions of up to 2048x1536 including 1920x1080 at 85Hz (HDTV). An onboard video encoder adds TV-out capabilities such as HDTV (420p, 720p, and 1080i), Component, and S-Video for customized solutions.

The other key features include two gigabit ethernet ports, four USB 2.0 channels, VGA, stereo audio, 4 serial ports (2 supporting RS232/422/485), parallel port, and one SATA II interface. The system also provides expansion via CompactFlash socket, Mini PCI Express Card and Mini PCI slot.

For military applications, the RuffSystem 840 with MIL-STD-D38999 connectors, and the MilSystem 840, available in Q4 of 2009. Both systems are designed to meet MIL-STD-810; support high shock, vibration, and humidity.

The RuffSystem 840 supports embedded and desktop operating systems, including Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and Windows XP Professional.
