New IGBTs and modules from Infineon for range of applications

Infineon has made available new 600V and 1200V High Speed 3 (3rd generation) IGBT product family for high frequency and hard switching applications. This device family is designed to address topologies switching up to 100kHz.

This family of IGBT products promotes high frequency applications such as electrical welders, solar inverters, etc. Infineon says it has reduced total turn-off losses by 35% compared to previous generation due to short tail current time making these devices to behave closer to the MOSFET.

"The demand for IGBTs in applications for industrial drives, inductive heating, welding, UPS, and solar inverters has increased dramatically in the last few years. All these applications require specific optimized power switches," said Roland Stele, Senior Marketing Manager IGBT Power Discretes at Infineon Technologies. "The latest ground breaking IGBT generation from Infineon is optimized for applications that need high-frequency, providing lowest switching losses and increased efficiency".

The Trenchstop technology used in these devices helps to reduce the conduction losses and switching losses in the system due to its low Vce(sat). This IGBT product family consists of a free wheeling diode, the size of which has been optimized for high speed switching, whilst maintaining high softness.

Package: 20A to 50A in 600V
15A to 40A in 1200V

Price: Prices range from EUR 1.90 (600V, 20A) to EUR 5.10 (1200 40A).

Infineon Technologies has also presented new IGBT modules. They are PrimePACK module with 1400A in 1700V in a PrimePACK 3 packaging , and the new flagship of the EconoDUAL family, the EconoDUAL 3 with 600A in 1200V.

"Introducing the two new modules in the proven PrimePACK and EconoDual families, Infineon once again underlines its technological leadership in offering IGBT modules with highest power density for energy-efficient, compact designs," says Martin Hierholzer, Vice President and General Manager Industrial Power at Infineon Technologies.

The PrimePACK 3 module (FF1400R17IP4) with 1400A in 1700V targets applications like renewable energies, traction applications, CAV (Construction, Commercial and Agriculture Vehicles) and powerful industrial drives. This module used for applications that require high power with the same compact dimentions. The modules dimentions are 89mm x 250mm. This package is said to provide good distribution and dissipation of heat, reduced thermal transfer resistance between base plate and heatsink, and low internal leakage inductance.

The EconoDUAL 3(FF600R12ME4) is a product in the EconoDUAL family offering 600A in 1200V. It finds applications in frequency converters in automation drive systems, central inverters in photovoltaic systems, and diesel generator drives in vehicles (CAV). The module is designed with regard to the interconnection technology and thermal resistance. This module is said to increase the power range by up to 30%, while the package dimensions remain the same. The PressFIT contact technology has been introduced in the EconoDUAL 3 family.

Availability:
PrimePACK 3 family (FF1400R17IP4) will be available as of the 3rd quarter of 2010.
EconoDUAL 3 family (FF600R12ME4) is available now.
