New improved SHARC DSP chips from ADI

Analog Devices (ADI) has added new members to its family of SHARC 32 bit floating point DSP chips. The new members are SHARC 2148x and SHARC 2147x series.

ADI says SHARC 2148x series processors deliver up to 33% greater performance (400MHz) and up to 250% more on-chip memory (5Mb) than competing 32-bit floating point DSPs. SHARC 2148x processors has integrated audio related peripherals and on-chip audio decoders for HD audio and home theater systems. SHARC 2148x processors is also suggested for developing cost-effective, next generation motor drive and industrial control systems.

The 266 MHz SHARC 2147x Series with 5 Mb on-chip memory consume 363 mW power (typical use-case) and is suitable for and applications such as radar based driver assistance systems (ADAS) in automotive electronics. SHARC 2147x processors withstand 105 degree C ambient operating temperature to meet automotive environment requirements. SHARC 2147x processors with precise signal processing are also well suited for use in portable medical equipments in generating accurate patient data.

ADI says SHARC 2147x series processors consume 20% less power than competing processors and provide more performance and memory integration per square millimeter than any other competing floating point DSP.

The other features of SHARC 2148x and SHARC 2147x processors include dedicated hardware accelerators with independent compute units and DMA memory mapping, Variable Instruction Set Architecture (VISA) support.

"With each new SHARC processor series that ADI brings to market, we witness a corresponding leap in design innovation among an ever-widening community of developers that look to SHARC as the industry's preeminent floating point processor platform," said Jerry McGuire, vice president, DSP division, Analog Devices, Inc. "SHARC 2148x and SHARC 2147x series processors extend SHARC-caliber floating point processing to a new class of designs, enabling designers to push the boundaries of system-functionality, affordability, and portability."
