Dual input Li+ ion battery charger IC for phones and cameras

Maxim Integrated Products has made available the Li+ ion battery charger IC MAX8934 for portable electronics products such as cameras, mobile phones, media players or any such similar devices. The MAX8934 is a dual-input linear charger which senses battery temperature to control the charging voltage and current accordingly to ensure long life of the battery as well as its safety. The MAX8934 switches to get its power from external power whenever there is no battery or connected to fully/over-discharged batteries and automatically switches the system load from the battery to safeguard the load and the battery from any further damage. MAX8934 packs current-sense circuitry and power switches for charging and switching the load between the battery and external power.

The MAX8934 can operate from either separate inputs for USB port and AC adapter power, or from a single input that accepts both. The DC input's current limit is adjustable up to 2A; the USB input's current limit is adjustable to 1.5A. Both DC and USB inputs support 100mA, 500mA, 1.5A, and USB-suspend modes. Charge current is adjustable up to 1.5A to support a wide range of battery capacities. Other features include a thermal regulation loop to prevent overheating, adaptive battery charging to prioritize support of system load over charge current, OVP (overvoltage protection), open-drain charge status and fault outputs, power-OK monitors, charge timers, and a battery thermistor monitor.

Package: thermally enhanced, 4mm x 4mm, 28-pin TQFN package
Operating temperature range: -40°C to +85°C.
Price: Each $2.03 for 1K pieces
