New 800V TRIACs from Renesas with high commutation characteristics

Renesas has developed new 800V TRIAC products, including the BCR16CM-16LH, with high commutation characteristics with a guaranteed junction temperature (Tj) of 150 Deg C, making them ideal for AC motor drive applications in electric household appliances such as washing machines and vacuum cleaners.

The main features of the new TRIAC products are as follows.

1. Higher commutation to reduce the total number of components
The new TRIACs have a voltage rating of 800 V and achieve the highest commutation level. The critical rate of rise of off-state commutating voltage (dv/dt)c, for which a high value is desirable to avoid malfunction, is approximately two to 20 times that of previous Renesas Technology TRIAC products. This ensures that the TRIAC can turn off surely when controlling an inductive load such as a motor and eliminates the need for a CR absorber circuit to prevent malfunction during commutation, thereby reducing the overall system cost
.
2. Guaranteed voltage of 800 V and junction temperature (Tj) of 150 Deg C
The new TRIACs have a guaranteed voltage of 800 V to ensure safe operation in regions where the power supply voltage is AC 200 V, such as Europe and Asian countries including China, South Korea, and India. Renesas Technology has previously released a series of 700V TRIACs with a guaranteed junction temperature (Tj) of 150 Deg C. The new TRIACs achieve a junction temperature (Tj) of 150 Deg C and 800 V. This makes thermal design much easier when compared with 125 Deg C TRIAC products and allows the use of a smaller cooling fin.

The new TRIACs use a planar technology and minimize off-state leak current.

To match a variety of electric household appliances (white goods), the lineup of new TRIACs are the current ratings of 4 A, 10 A, 12 A, and 16 A, and the available packages are uninsulated TO-220 and MP3A and insulated TO-220FL.
