Power factor corrected LED driver from
ON Semiconductor supports TRIAC dimming
ON Semiconductor has launched new power factor corrected
(near to unity power factor) dimmable LED driver for LED
lamps used to replace other non-green lighting in residential
and commercial buildings.
The NCL30000 is a switch mode power supply controller in
flyback architecture used for driving isolated flyback LED
drivers and eliminates the use of DC/DC voltage converter
stage. It employs a Critical Conduction Mode (CrM) control
technique to correct the power factor over wide input voltages
and output power.
Constant on-time CrM improves power efficiency at lower
power, making this IC comply with regulatory requirements
and meet overall system efficacy requirements.
The suggested applications of this LED driver include power
supplies, LED-based down lights, TRIAC dimmable LED-based
lamps and power factor corrected constant voltage supplies.
This IC is designed to work with both TRIAC and trailing
edge line dimmers. Based on the dimmer used, the LED output
can be controlled down to less than 2%.
ON Semiconductor is providing three reference designs with
power output up to 15 Watts. This device can drive 4-15
LEDs at 350 mA. However they are flexible enough to support
power output range of 5 W to 30 W
The reference designs are:
NCL30000LED1GEVB: 115 Vac version, 90 to 135 Vac input voltage
(Dimmable)
NCL30000LED2GEVB: 230 Vac version, 180 to 265 Vac input
voltage (TRIAC Dimmable)
NCL30000LED3GEVB: Extended universal version, 90 to 305
Vac input voltage
Operating temperature range: -40 Deg C to +125 Deg C making
them suitable for solid-state lighting applications.
The NCL30000 features low startup current of 24 micro amps
(µA) (typical) and a low operating current of 2 milli
amps (mA) (typical) to further improve the energy efficiency.
NCL30000 also features programmable on time limiter, zero
current detect sense block, gate driver, pulse width modulation
(PWM) circuit and protection functions needed to implement
a CrM switch mode power supply.
"Our customers have a need for dimmable LED driver
solutions that are compatible with existing wiring and controls,"
said Christophe Warin, AC-DC business unit manager at ON
Semiconductor. "The NCL30000 offers excellent dimming
performance down to greater than 2 percent. This device
is ideally suited for isolated flyback but can also be used
with non-isolated buck topologies."
